History:

Laura's father ran a company involved in the construction of nuclear plants. When the Three Mile Island disaster struck, he did a number of interviews assuring everyone nuclear power was safe. It was about this time his wife became pregnant with twins. Joy turned to sadness when it was revealed that, though one child seemed perfectly healthy, the other seemed to be deformed, mutated. After a lot of debate, they decided to attempt to abort the mutated fetus. Laura was the healthy one. The other would come to be named Goblyn (see Goblyn) During the procedure, she somehow instinctively became aware of the danger, and moved to protect her, activating her mutant powers and sending her sister away, to another dimension known as the Dreamlands. The doctors had no idea what happened, but only the healthy baby was left.

Before the Laura was born, her parents moved to Canada where Susan had family, to get out of the public eye while they raised Laura. It was soon learned that something was wrong with Laura too. She was diagnosed with a form of autism. She grew up going to special schools to try to draw her out, but progress was always slow.

When puberty hit, the emotional bond between Laura and her sister finally broke through the dimensions, gaining them some awareness of each other. Laura withdrew further, focusing on this link rather than the outside world, so she was sent to a specialist in Toronto.

While there, she found herself transfered to the care of a medium powered telepath, Eric Syme, who wanted to form his own group of mutants. When he used his powers on her, something happened to the link, making Laura and Goblyn both fully aware of each other's world.

Syme, though he helped her break out of her autism, tried to manipulate Laura, telling her why her parents tried to kill Goblyn, and to turn her against them, and humans in general. He also tried to get her to bring back Goblyn, but when she seemed unable to, he grew frustrated and struck her. That brought Goblyn out, ready to strike back, and Laura was shifted to Goblyn's forest home in the Dreamlands. When she returned, she found the doctor apparently dead. The coroner diagnosed an aneurysm.

Laura was soon returned home, much improved, though she harbored some anger at her parents. This blew up when she learned, during a trip to a family cabin in British Columbia, that their parents had aborted another child because it was an obvious mutant. She released Goblyn, willingly, sure that she would make them pay, and went to the Dreamlands. When she returned to Earth, hours later, her parents were gone, the cabin was damaged, and there were blood traces. Laura retreated into an autism trance, to protect herself from being a suspect, rather than from any real shock. The police assumed someone abducted her parents, and when she finally let a therapist 'break through', she confirmed this theory. As far as she knew, it was the truth; she believes Goblyn killed them both and buried them to protect her from the police.

Laura was put in a foster home, and eventually even graduated high school. When she turned 18, she inherited much of her parents' estate. She now lives in New York City, walking the streets at night without fear, for she knows her sister will protect her.

Goblyn

Real name: Goblyn (or Lynn) Dean
Occupation: Hunter/Gatherer
Identity: Goblyn's true identity and existence is unknown to the majority of the world.
Legal status: Goblyn has no legal status on Earth.
Other aliases: None
Place of birth: Dreamlands
Marital status: Single
Known relatives: Darby & Susan Dean (parents), Laura Dean (twin sister)
Group affiliation: Brotherhood of Mutants (via Laura)
Base of operations: The Dreamlands
First appearance: August, 2000
History:

Before Goblyn was born, doctors told her parents that she had severe deformities, and there was little chance for a normal life. Her father's company was involved in nuclear plant construction, and as she was conceived around the time of the Three Mile Island incident, he feared the media reaction if they found out. They agreed to attempt a procedure to abort Goblyn, while leaving her apparently normal sister Laura unharmed (see Dean, Laura). During the procedure, Laura somehow instinctively moved to protect Goblyn, by activating her own mutant power.

Goblyn was sent to another dimension, the Dreamlands, where she grew up virtually alone, surviving first by luck and later through tenacity and self-taught survival skills. Years later, the emotional bond between the twins finally started to reach beyond the dimensions, and Goblyn learned she was no longer alone. Not long after that, she learned the whole story of what happened to her as the result of telepathic intrusions on that bond.

It wasn't long before she was summoned back to the real world, to defend Laura from the same telepath, who hit her in a fit of anger. She swapped places with Laura, and hopped on the doctor, who almost immediately died of apparently natural causes. The threat gone, Goblyn returned. From time to time after that, Goblyn'd switch places with Laura again, whenever she was in danger, or just wanted to. They never met face to face, but they were always aware of each other.

Years later, Goblyn was summoned in front of her parents, when Laura learned that their parents had aborted another child. Instead of killing her as she knew Laura wanted her to, Goblyn brought both her parents back to the Dreamlands with her, and hid this fact from Laura. There, she seemingly abandoned them, but kept an eye on the situation to make sure they weren't harmed. Some time thereafter, her parents found a road leading to a city, and followed it. Goblyn never saw them again.

Goblyn still lives in the Dreamlands, content with simple survival, though she does make an appearance on Earth whenever Laura swaps with her. This occurs mostly whenever Laura's in danger or afraid. It has sometimes lead to the death of attackers.
