History:
The history of the mutant known as Caliban is still unrevealed. It seems that he was born with his unusual appearance and was not educated to any significant degree. Although not labled a mutant (because the existence of mutants was unknown), he was almost universally shunned as a freak, suffering from some form of birth defect.
He has from time to time suffered physical abuse from humans who needed no other reason than that he seemed weak and scared, and looked different. Usually, once they've started, his fear kicks in and he's able to fight them off with enhanced strength or scare them away. Still, the attacks were enough to keep him from appearing in public when necessary. He kept to the dark places nobody goes, caves and occasionally sewers.
Somewhere along the line, Caliban met a man named Fabian Cortez, drawn to him due to a buzzing in his head when he was near. After watching him from afar for some time, he decided to risk making contact. Although a little disdainful for Caliban's meek nature, he was overjoyed when he learned that Caliban had the power to sense other mutants (or 'touched ones' as he described it). He started taking care of Caliban, and using him to help find other mutants. Later, Fabian's small group would be found by another to form the MLF.
Caliban continued to do his job locating 'touched' people. Among those was Charlotte Beck, aka Friction. He has developed a small crush on her, but she seems very uncomfortable with him, probably due to his creepy appearance.
During an attempt to rescue Rogue from the police and recruit her at the same time, Caliban was shot in the leg by a police officer. He has recovered, and has gone on subsequent recruitment efforts.
The bulk of the MLF was arrested in a raid in early February 2001, although Caliban himself managed to escape. He wandered quite a while before hooking up with Scuzz, to try to convince him to help rescue Fabian from jail. Scuzz refused, wanting Caliban to join him instead.
Caliban hooked up briefly with the MLF again, but was captured in an altercation with the Brotherhood. Since then, he has joined the Brotherhood and assists them where required in tracking down mutants.

Strength level: Caliban possesses the normal human strength
of a man his height and build who engages in regular exercise. When
frightened, he possesses superhuman strength allowing him to lift (press)
approximately 1 ton.
Known superhuman powers: Caliban possesses the mutant
ability to sense when other mutants are nearby, and in which direction.
The exact range is not yet clear, but it is within several hundred yards.
He can identify mutants he has seen before by their 'feel', and use it to
follow them. When extremely frightened or angry, Caliban also possesses
superhuman strength, and can project his feelings of fear onto others in
the immediate area. Caliban also sees with no difficulty in the dark.

Weapons and paraphernalia: Caliban has been provided with
some sort of body armor by the MLF, which is bullet-resistant and can be
worn underneath his clothes. He also usually wears a hooded garment to
cover his appearance when he's out in public.
