This is our 297th edition. Two books this week. These are the last two monthly series I buy.
This week we have...
New Mutants #4 - "Return of the Legion, Part 4: Invasive Surgery"
(Writer: Zeb Wells, Pencils: Diogenes Neves, Inks:
Cam Smith with Ed Tadeo & Craig Yeung, Colors: John
Rauch)
(jump to last issue)
While Illyana tries to track down Xi'an, inside Legion's head, the rest of the New Mutants confront him physically.
It's the conclusion to the first arc, so there's not really too much to say... there's a lot of fighting, and a couple really cool moments. It's perhaps not the most exciting conclusion, but it's solid work and I still want to read more.

The Runaways are still locked in the house, but with Hunter Stein's
help they try to find a way out of their predicament.
This issue is just a bit of a mess. Firstly, and probably an
artistic problem, the sense of place is messed up. There's a
point where Nico casts a spell and seemingly destroys everything,
leaving them on a completely empty beach, with the badguys. Then
a temporary structure is created. But then, suddenly, bits of
plants and rubble are still there with them, as is the Leapfrog.
Not only that, there's a secret facility hidden underneath them
that they somehow have access to. It's more than a little
confusing.
But beyond that, there's the writing. Most of the big developments
in the issue kind of lose their impact because they're things that
were brought up and then tossed aside by another author. There's
also that just doesn't seem to work with what we know about what's
going on. The other big developments seem to come out of nowhere
just because they'd be dramatic-looking.
Worst of all, there isn't even the good characterization that
carried the last few issues. Most of it's just moving along, and
the few moments of interaction just ring false to me.
So far, there's been no solicitations of Runaways past the next
issue. Although it hasn't been announced as cancelled, that's
certainly a possibility. However, if it keeps going like this,
I can't really say I'm going to miss it.
