This is our 265th edition. Three books today, but I'm running late so reviews will be brief.
This week we have...
New Warriors #13 - "Thrashed, Conclusion" (Writer: Kevin Grevioux,
Penciler: Reilly Brown, Inker: Juan Vlasco,
Colorist: Jay David Ramos)
(jump to last issue)
Half the New Warriors have been trapped with the Machinesmith, but now it's time for their teammates to come rushing in to save them.
Well, it's not all that unexpected that a conclusion to an arc is a lot of fighting the bad guy, and that's pretty well what we get here. Unfortunately, it doesn't do much for me, because most of the last few issues were also fighting the bad guy. We don't get much more development on what Night Thrasher's real goals are, and it feels like the team's right back in the place they were before - mistrustful of Thrasher but willing to go along.
So far, it's not looking good for me continuing to buy the series, but then, it's not looking good for the series continuing at all. I suspect it won't last another 12 issues.
Review: 3 stars
With war breaking out in the streets of 1907 New York, the Runaways
not only have to survive, they have to find a way to return to
their own time, and decide if anybody's coming along with them.
It's been a long time coming. A really long time coming. The
6 issue arc took over a year to complete. But, I liked it. The
issue had some powerful moments (although Whedon detractors will
likely have a few things to complain about), and makes a few
tweaks to the status quo. Some are good, some I'm indifferent
about so far but willing to be persuaded.
Still, I quite liked it and am naming it my Pick of the Week.
Review: 3.5 stars
With the Runaways still in New York after their last adventure,
they're surprised when an army of skrulls appears. Meanwhile,
the Young Avengers try to respond to the threat, but it may be
too much even for them, particularly because one of their own
is a target.
I can't speak to how well the issue connects with Secret
Invasion as a whole, as I'm pretty well giving that series a
pass. It does tie in fairly well with Runaways, though, so
long as you don't look too closely (the timeline of the
Runaways series should still be about a year behind the other
titles, and they have to make slight patches to make them
still be in New York, but it works nonetheless).
There's only limited contact between the two teams in this
issue, which is a shame, and, in fact, only a few members of
each team really get much time in the book, but when you combine
two big casts that's to be expected. Still, it's good fun for a
tie in book.
Review: 3.25 stars
Well, that's it for this week folks. Next week, according to the
shipping list, it's going to be a skip week for me. So unless
something surprising shows up, I'll be back in two...
See you next time...
