This is our 249th edition. Two books to review, so let's get right to them.
This week we have...
Avengers: The Initiative #9 - "Killed In Action, Part 2 of 4: First
Casualties" (Writers: Dan Slott &
Christos N. Gage, Artist: Stefano Caselli,
Color Art: Daniele Rudoni)
(jump to last issue)
We find out how and why KIA started killing, and he continues his spree while some of the rest of the Initiative tries to help him.
There is a fair bit of presumed death in this issue, although given some of the victims I have a feeling some of this will be reversed somehow. Mostly, this issue hinged on the explanation for KIA's turn to evil and... it doesn't really do it. Oh, it explains it, but instead of an explanation that feels natural in some way, it looks like we're getting some sort of hybrid of a semi-rational explanation (to a disturbed mind) and weird technobabble sparking it off.
This, combined with the fact that I've seen too much death in the Marvel Universe lately, somewhat blunted the enjoyment for me. I'm thinking I may not enjoy the arc very much. However, whether I continue depends largely on what happens after the arc, how they deal with the aftermath.

Sinister has escaped from prison, and is going about his mission to
kill a set number of mutants. Bishop's team of X-Men goes after him
as he begins to hunt in the Morlock tunnels.
Of course it's yet another redoing of old X-Men stories, almost a
revamp of the Morlock Massacre combined with Apocalypse.
There's also a lot of death in this book, even of some of the major
characters, but it doesn't put me off as it does in the Initiative.
I think one of the reasons here is personal. This will be my last
Ultimate X-Men arc. After seeing Loeb screw up the Ultimates, I'm
not inclined to stick around to see his take on Ultimate X-Men. As
such, the death feel less like random deaths to make the story have
some kind of 'impact' and more like the natural result of a story's
end, in a non-serial environment. I think even beyond that though,
the reasons for the major deaths here seem more interesting than in
Initiative, and so I'm calling this one my Pick of the Week.

Well, that's it for this week folks. Next week, according to the
shipping list, there's nothing scheduled for me. We'll see if
something shows up when it gets finalized.
See you next time...
